What we're up to
A quick run down of the current and recent projects that Keeping it Wild is tackling!
11/2/24 - Bird ringing and habitat management
We worked at Stud Farm in Birklands, learning about the importance of bird ringing and how it can provide insight into population dynamics, trends in species declines or changes in migration routes. Working with experts such as Andy and Ann from Birklands Ringing Group who are licensed and have years of experience gives us very special opportunities to learn and see birds up close in the hand.
10/2/24 - St Ann's allotment
We helped the St Ann's team to create their own Youth Group, giving advice on what inspired us to join a volunteer group, the barriers and what makes a successful program and how we can work together to create more opportunities for young people in the city take action for nature and the environment.
3/2/24 - Center Parcs - working with our corporate supporter
We took part in two sessions working with Center Parcs doing Heathland management. This provided insight into what a large business can do for people and wildlife, and provided an opportunity to experience a different style of habitat management with dedicated conservation rangers, and learn what Green Job opportunities there are at Center Parcs.
27/1/24 - Snape Wood
We collaborated with Nottingham Youth Climate Assembly and Snape Wood Conservation Crew, helping to give more young people the opportunity to take hands on action in Nottingham whilst supporting a local community group in achieving a more biodiverse local wildlife site in Bulwell. This is one of three sessions we have here.
2023 Projects
Bat Walks
During our bat walks with Michael Walker and Lorna Griffiths, we learned about bats in Nottinghamshire, how to use a detector, and the methods of surveying bats with a licence.
Dave Goulson Talk
We ran a fundraising stall selling bat boxes and bird boxes after a Dave Goulson talk in 2023 about rewilding. It was an incredible insight into how to personally promote biodiversity in local spaces and gardens etc.
Nottingham Pride 2023
We joined the march through Nottingham to demonstrate our passion for inspiring and empowering people from all backgrounds, cultures, identities, and abilities to change the natural world.
Green Hustle 2023
Green Hustle is a unique festival spanning multiple days where environmental action-takers took to Nottingham's Market Square to celebrate making a difference for nature.
We attended workshops at the Council House about how to solve contemporary issues related to climate with multiple groups: NYCA, Pythian club, Nottingham's sheriff and Mayor, and other local businesses e.g. Castlerock Brewery.
On the next day we ran a Keeping it Wild stall to promote our work and talk to the public.
For more information, read the blog Keeping it Wild member Joe Barkes wrote about his experiences at the festival.
Taking petition to Parliament
In June 2023, some of our members travelled to London to demand a wilder future for us all by presenting a 60,000-strong petition, along with with over 10,000 personal views shared by members of the public, to Parliament.
