New beer brewed to support wildflower meadow appeal to launch at special event

A new beer by Castle Rock Brewery, brewed in support of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust's current appeal, is set to launch with a special event.

The latest beer in a partnership between Castle Rock Brewery and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust stretching back over two decades is set to be launched at a special beer launch and quiz night at Nottingham’s Canal House pub on Thursday 29th August.

The event will raise funds to support Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s latest appeal and will see the launch of In the Meadows, a new beer brewed by Castle Rock Brewery.  The pale ale, which includes honey from the Poppy and Pint’s rooftop hives, has been brewed in support of the charity’s Meadows appeal, which aims to protect, restore, and sustain some of the county’s most important remaining wildflower meadows.

Across the UK, it is estimated that we have lost 97% of wildflower meadows since the 1930s, but here in Nottinghamshire, experts believe it to be as high as 99%.

The Trust which cares for nature reserves across Nottinghamshire and stands up for wildlife withing the planning system, launched a fundraising appeal to raise at least £10,000 to protect the meadows in its care, support habitat restoration – and to sustain the annual cycle of management which supports an array of species – including vital pollinators and ground-nesting birds such as the skylark.

The partnership between Castle Rock Brewery and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust stretches back to 2001. Through creative projects like the brewery’s series of over 100 ‘Natural Selection’ beers, which championed wildlife through their names and pump clip artwork, including the ever-popular Screech Owl, the partnership has helped generate over £130,000 of support for the Trust’s work across the county.

As well as raising funds at the beer launch and quiz night, 10p from the sale of every pint of In the Meadows will be donated to the appeal.

Speaking ahead of the special event the Trust’s Head of Communications Erin McDaid said: “I could never have imagined that a meeting over a beer with the brewery’s founder Chris Holmes and my suggestion to combine two of my passions – wildlife and beer – would lead to an alliance that is still delivering for nature over 20 years on,  I’m really looking forward to trying In the Meadows – which my colleagues had a hand in making -  and I hope plenty of folk will come along to the Canal House to sample it and to test their knowledge during the quiz on the 29th.”

In addition to the quiz, the evening will feature a raffle with a range of great prizes - with all profits going towards the Trust’s Meadows Appeal to support the care of the Trust’s meadow nature reserve, its nature grazing herd and flock, the purchase of tools for meadow cutting and ongoing species monitoring.
